Form & Function

“Form follows function” is a famous, overused axiom in the world of art and design. It means purpose should determine appearance. They’re not wrong; form should be intertwined with function. But focusing on what’s “practical” can oftentimes tempt us to compromise what’s “beautiful.” But our God certainly wasn’t simply concerned with austere functionality when he carved canyons, sprouted spruces, and bred blue jays. Of course then, he did not spare any of his infinite creativity on you and me. God is the ultimate artist and designer, perfectly balancing the harmonious dance between form and function. In his image, he created us to do the same.
